Good winning performances by Satu Lagi, Pep Torque and Mohaka were among the highlights at today’s Hastings jumpouts.

There were 13 heats run outside markers on the course proper, five metres out from the running rail. The track provided dead footing.

Satu Lagi, a Rating 80 horse and the winner of three races, only had three inexperienced maiden gallopers opposing him in one of the 750m heats but was nevertheless impressive as he cruised to the line for a four length victory and clocked the fastest time of the four heats over the distance.

The Per Incanto gelding has not raced for 18 months but trainer Patrick Campbell is thrilled with how he is coming up in a new campaign, saying he horse is so much stronger now.

Campbell intends giving the six-year-old an official barrier trial before he kicks off in an Open 1300m race on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival, on October 2.

Pep Torque, who hasn’t raced since April, recorded the fastest time of the six heats run over 1000m when he clocked 60.8s in comfortably beating two well performed gallopers in Miss Labasa and Shezzacatch.

Pep Torque, trained at Waipukurau by Kirsty Lawrence, is the winner of seven races with his last start being in the Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m) on April 3 where he suffered a minor leg injury after being hampered in the running. He looks to have come back well after a winter spell.

Mohaka scored an easy win in the only 1200m heat on the program, striding clear in the final stages to win by 1-1/4 lengths. Trainers Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen have given the Nadeem mare a nice slow build up as she prepares for what is likely to be her last preparation. She is expected to resume in a Rating 74 race over 1400m at Woodville on Thursday of next week and is booked to be mated with Waikato Stud-based stallion Super Seth this year.
