Fancy Like Lass, preparing for the Listed $90,000 Lightning Handicap (1200m) at Trentham on March 16, impressed at today’s Hastings jumpouts when producing a strong win over 1000 metres.

There were eight heats run up against the running rail on the course proper.

Fancy Like Lass contested the open 1000m heat where she was up against proven race winners Wewillrock, Rockburn and Eyegeegee.

Regular rider Kate Hercock was aboard Fancy Like Lass and she kept the mare wide out on the track and at the back of the four-horse field until the home straight.

She then asked the daughter of Helmet to extend and she powered home to win by a short neck from Rockburn, with Eyegeegee and Wewillrock also close up.

Fancy Like Lass has not raced since winning over 1000m at Trentham on January 20 but trainers Mick Brown and Sue Thompson have kept the horse ticking over nicely since then.

Rockburn and Wewillrock both look ready to return to the racetrack while Eeygeegee will now have a barrier trial before she resumes racing, according to co-trainer Guy Lowry.

The Lowry/Zydenbos-trained Candle was an addition to today’s jumpout fields after she missed out on a start when yesterday’s Hawke’s Bay meeting was abandoned half-way through the programme.

The Super Easy mare proved too good for four maiden rivals in her 1000m heat, winning by 1-1/4 lengths.

Makkaldee, another who missed out on a race at Hastings yesterday, was added to the field for the 1200m heat and duly won nicely by three-quarters of a length.
