Pegau and Courtezin, two newcomers to the John Bary stable, scored impressive wins at today’s Hastings jumpouts.
There were five heats held up against the running rail on the course proper, which provided firm footing.
Pegau contested a six-horse maiden heat over 1200m and, after settling back off the pace in the early stages, she rounded up the leaders very quickly in the straight and raced away to win by three lengths. Her winning time of 1:15.56 was slightly quicker than Hunta Pence took in winning the open 1200m heat.
Pegau is a Tivaci mare who won four barrier trials at the beginning of this season before recording a fourth and a sixth for Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta.
Courtezin contested the 1000m heat and was just as impressive when scoring by 2 lengths in a time of 60.19s.
The two 750m heats were taken out in good fashion by a Belardo two-year-old gelding from the John Bary stable and a War Decree two-year-old gelding trained by Guy Lowry.
