A good 1000-metre workout by the stablemates Mr Bully Tee and Fancy Like Lass was one of the highlights at this morning’s Hastings track session.
Fast work was mainly carried out on the No.1 grass, which provided soft footing after 25 millimeters of rain had fallen on the Hastings track in 48 hours.
A penetrometer reading was taken on the course proper and came up as a heavy-8, with mainly drying weather expected for the rest of the week.
Mr Bully Tee and Fancy Like Lass worked over 1000m on the grass in 1:07.1, running the first 400m in an easy 30.6s before quickening nicely over the last 600 in 36.5.
Both horses will be entered for Saturday’s second day of the Colliers Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival although their co-trainer, Mick Brown, said they will only start if track conditions are not too testing.
One Dream One Soul, who will line up in the Rating 75 race over 1600m at Hastings on Saturday, worked well on her own when running 1000m on the grass in 1:05.6, the last 600 in 38.3. Her last start failure is best forgotten as she was found to have a nail embedded in her left-hand front hoof. She was moving freely again this morning and Lisa Allpress will ride her again on Saturday.
Pep Torque and Bahia Emerald worked together over 1000m on the grass in 1:07.6, the last 600 in 38.6. Pep Torque is entered for the Open 2000m race at Hastings on Saturday, but trainer Kirsty Lawrence said he will be a doubtful starter if the track remains heavy. Bahia Emerald will contest the Rating 65 race over 2100m.
She’s Miss Gevious, another likely starter in the Rating 65 race over 2100m, had co-trainer Fred Pratt aboard when working in from the 1000m peg on the plough (slushy) in 1:11.2, the last 600 in 38.5.
Last start winner Karehana Bay clocked 52.8 for a good solo workout on the grass, coming home the last 600 in 38.7. Trainer Patrick Campbell said the horse has done so well since his Awapuni victory that he will now line him up in the Special Conditions 1300m race at Hastings on Saturday.
Free Bee worked in from the 1000m peg on the grass and was timed to run the last 800m in 54.3, the final 600 in 38.9 while stablemate Checkpoint Charlie underwent similar work and recorded 55.8 for 800m, the last 600 in 39.5.
High Heaven and Percytheperincanto worked together over 600m on the plough in 39.2 with High Heaven a likely starter at Woodville this Sunday.
A Vadamos two-year-old filly trained by Dean Howard ended her work on the plough with 600m in 41.3.
