Mohaka, preparing for Saturday’s Group 3 Taranaki Cup, worked well on her own at Tuesday’s Hastings track session.
There was not much in the way of fast work, which was confined to the plough (soft).
Mohaka worked in from the 1000m peg in 1:05.4, quickening the pace as she went. She came home the last 600m in 36.6 and final 400m in 23.1.
The Nadeem mare was a game last start third in the Trentham Stakes (2100m) on January 15 and co-trainer Guy Lowry said they are using this Saturday’s 1800m race at New Plymouth as a lead up to the Group 2 Avondale Cup (2400m) at Ellerslie on February 19. Kate Hercock has been booked to ride the mare again this Saturday.
A Per Incanto-Lutene Belle three-year-old gelding in the Lowry/Cullen stable ran an easy 600m in 43.2, the last 600 in 28. He shows plenty of promise.
A Niagara two-year-old gelding had trainer Dean Howard aboard when running an easy 800m, the last 600 in 41.9. He was impressive when winning a 750m jumpout at Hastings last Friday. A Per Incanto-Braandnickers three-year-old gelding and a Mongolian Khan three-year-old filly were not hurried when working together over 800m, the last 600 in 41.6 while a Redwood three-year-old filly and one by Iffraaj ran the last 600m of their work in 43.9.
