Mohaka was the only horse to gallop at the Hastings track this morning as she prepares for Friday’s Taranaki Cup at Awapuni.
More than 85 millimetres of rain had fallen on the Hastings racecourse between Sunday morning and Tuesday morning, leaving the plough covered in surface water and unsuitable for galloping on.
Trainer Guy Lowry was given permission to gallop Mohaka on the course proper, about 10 metres out from the running rail.
The Nadeem mare worked in from the 1000m peg in 1:06.5, running the first 400m in 28.2 before coming home the last 600 in 38.3. It was a good workout, considering the track was rated a heavy-10.
The Taranaki Cup was supposed to be run over 1800m at New Plymouth last Saturday and Lowry took Mohaka on the long float trip there, only to have to turn around and head home after the meeting was abandoned after one race.
The mare looks to have taken no harm from the arduous journey and will appreciate the race being run over an extra 200m at Awapuni.
