Best Seller, preparing for Saturday’s Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, worked well in company at tis morning’s Hastings track session.
Fast work was mainly confined to the plough although there were also several gallops on the No.1 grass and two on the course proper, with both of these tracks providing very heavy footing.
Best Seller worked with her more experienced stablemate Wicket Maiden over 1000m on the grass and steadily increased the speed to sprint home the last 600m in 36.8.
It was good work from both horses and showed that Best Seller has trained on well since finishing second in the Matamata Breeders Stakes (1200m) a month ago.
New Orleans Jazz, another entered for the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Awapuni, worked with Truly over 1000m on the course proper in 1:09.6. They ran the first 400m in 30.3 before coming home the last 600 in 39.3.
Hunta Pence and Motivation were the others who galloped on the course proper and they clocked 1:23.9 for 1200m, the last 600 in 40.9. Hunta Pence is entered for Saturday’s Group 2 Awapuni Gold Cup (2000m) while Motivation is a likely starter in the Listed Power Farming Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m) on April 16.
No Time To Jazz took the time honours for the morning when she sped over the last 600m of her work on the plough in 36.1. The Swiss Ace mare has won her last two starts, both on the Hastings track, and will line up next in a Rating 74 race over 1400m there on April 16.
Mohaka looked keen to go a lot faster when running 1000m on the plough at three-quarter pace, the last 600 in 45.6. She found the 3200m of the Auckland Cup a bit too far and will now drop back to 2200m in the Power Farming Hawke’s Bay Cup.
Can I Get An Amen, a game last start winner of the Lightning Handicap (1200m) at Trentham, was another from the Lowry/Cullen stable restricted to just three-quarter pace and ran home her last 600m in 41.4. She will start next in the Listed 1200m sprint at Hastings on April 16.
Secret Falls was another who showed good speed when working on the plough, clocking 1:03.8 for 1000m, the last 600 in 36.3. She seemed to get through the wet conditions well.
She’s So Reliable and Iffidapunt, two members of John Bary’s team, worked together over 1000m on the grass in 1:06.2, the last 600 in 37.1. Iffidapunt finished a close second in a 750m jumpout at Hastings a month ago and followed that up with a second in a 1000m trial at Otaki last week.
Lilly Laguna and a Makfi four-year-old gelding, two others in the Bary stable, ran 1000m in 1:07, the last 600 in 38.7. Lilly Laguna missed a start at last Sunday’s abandoned Tauherenikau meeting but is still on target for the Power Farming Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m) on April 16.
Estefania worked early in the session and was not hurried when running 1000m on the plough, the last 600 in 46.8 while Wewillrock worked in easily from the 800m peg on the same track and was timed to run home the last 600 in 41.6. He looks to have freshened up well while Estefania is close to a return to racing.
Duncan Creek and Karehana Bay, two horses in Patrick Campbell’s stable, worked together over 800m in 50.5, the last 600 in 37.6 while Joule worked in from the 1000m peg on her own, sprinting home the last 600 in 36.3. She is a Shocking four-year-old mare trained by Pam Holden.
Je Sweye, who is a Sweyness filly trained by Lee Somervell, sprinted the last 600m of her work on the plough in 37.4 while her stablemate One Dream One Soul ran a solo 1000m on the grass in 1:06.3, the last 600 in 40.2.
Ask Pa and Bold Iris, two other members of John Bary’s team, worked together over 1000m on the grass in 1:04.9, the last 600 in 37.1.
Magic Incanto ended her work with a 600m sprint on the grass in 39.5. Trainer Fred Pratt said he is now considering stepping the mare up in distance in the Power Farming Hawkes Bay Cup (2200m) on April 16.
Free Bee worked on her own over 1000m on the plough in 1:09.3, the last 600 in 39.3 while an Iffraaj four-year-old mare was kept to three-quarter pace over 1000m, the last 600 in 45.3.
