John Jenkins | April 12, 2022

Hunta Pence, preparing for Saturday’s Power Farming Hawke’s Bay Cup, strode out well in a solo gallop on the course proper at tis morning’s Hastings track session.

Fast work was mainly confined to the plough, which provided good footing.

A penetrometer reading was taken on the course proper and came up as a good-4.

Hunta Pence was kept out in the middle of the track on the course proper and worked in from the 1400m peg, running home the last 1200m in 1:21.8. He was going easily for the first 600 before quickening over the last 600 in 38.9.

It was good hit out by the nine-year-old who will be having his fourth attempt at the Hawke’s Bay Cup, with his best placing being a third in 2018. Johnathan Parkes has been booked to ride him.

Magic Incanto, another Hawke’s Bay Cup candidate, had trainer Fred Pratt aboard when sprinting home the last 600m of her work on the plough in 37.6. She looked keen to go a lot faster.

Mohaka, another Hastings-trained runner in the Hawke’s Bay Cup, had a jumpout over 1200m at Waipukurau on Monday to help prepare her for the 2200m feature.

Can I Get An Amen and Karehana Bay took the time honours on the plough when they recorded a quick 1:02.4 for 1000m, the last 600 in 35.6.

Can I Get An Amen has been kept fresh since winning the Lightning Handicap (1200m) at Trentham on March 19 and will line up in the Listed Power Turf Sprint (1200m) at Hastings this Saturday. Lisa Allpress has been booked to ride her.

Last start winner Free Bee ran a solo 1000m on the plough in 1:05.9, the last 600 in 37.2 and looked to be working well at the finish. She could head to Woodville on Monday for a Rating 65 race over 1200m.

Stablemates Free Thyme and Serengeti, two others who are likely starters at Woodville next Monday, worked together over 1000m in 1:04.5, the last 600 in 37.2 while Unfasten worked twice over 600m, the first in 43.7 and the second in 43.

Matt Kain, who will start in the Rating 65 race over 1400m at Hastings on Saturday providing the track is not too rain affected, ran a solo 800m in 54.1, the last 600 in 38.1.

Truly and Duncan Creek, two horses in Patrick Campbell’s stable, clocked 1:08.6 for 1000m, the last 600 in 37.4 and they are two others down to start at Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay meeting.

Briar worked in at three-quarter pace from the 800m peg and was timed to run the last 600 in 44.6.
