Penny Royal, who heads back to her favourite track at Taupo on Wednesday of next week, turned in one of the best gallops at this morning’s Hastings track session.
Fast work was confined to the plough, which provided soft footing.
Penny Ryal ran a solo 800m in 51.5, running the first 200 in an easy 14.8 before sprinting home the last 600 in 36.7. The Per Incanto mare has been freshened since finishing fourth over 1550m on the Cambridge synthetic track in late June and finished a close second in a 1000m jumpout at Hastings on August 8.
Penny Royal is the winner of four races and they have all been on the Taupo track. She is now owned and trained by Porangahau-based Mary Darby.
The steeplechaser Donardo showed he is ready for a big performance at this Sunday’s Waverley meeting when he worked over three rounds on the plough, quickening over the last 1000m in 1:06.3 and coming home the last 600 in 38s. It was excellent work by a jumper.
No Time To Jazz clocked 1:01.9 for a solo 1000m, the last 600 in 37.1 while One Dream One Soul, in her first serious gallop since resuming from a spell, sprinted 600m in 36.7. They are both being prepared for the first day of the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival on September 10.
Shezzacatch was kept to just three-quarter pace over 800m, running the last 600 in 43s while stablemate Love Letter underwent similar work and clocked 45.1 for her last 600m. Both horses look to be coming up well again in fresh campaigns.
Duncan Creek ended his work with 600m in 39s while a Telperion three-year-old filly in the Patrick Campbell stable worked over 800m and was timed to run the last 600 in 39.2.
Overstayer worked easily over 1000m in 1:16.3, the last 600 in 43.7 while a Mongolian Khan four-year-old gelding in the Thompson/Brown stable clocked 1:11.3 for an easy 1000m, the last 600 in 40.8.
A Tarzino three-year-old filly trained by Patrick Campbell worked in from the 600m peg and was timed to run home the last 400 in 36.4 while Go Hugo was not pressured when running 800m in 56.5, the last 600 in 42.9. He finished a close third in a 1000m heat at the Hastings jumpouts on August 4.
A Darci Brahma three-year-old and a Mongolian Khan four-year-old, both in the stable of Richard McKenzie and Jordan Bassett, worked in at three-quarter pace from the 800m peg and came home the last 600 in 42.6 while a Charm Spirit three-year-old filly trained by Guy Lowry ended her work with 600m in 43.3.
