Stakes winning mare Shezzacatch worked well on her own at this morning’s Hastings trackwork session in preparation for a return to racing on the second day of the Colliers Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival on Saturday week.
Fast work was confined to the plough, which provided surprisingly good footing after another 10 millimetres of rain fell overnight.
Shezzacatch worked in from the 1000m peg on her own in 1:05, running the first 400m in an easy 29.4 before quickening appreciably over the last 600 in 35.6. The Savabeel mare hasn’t raced since finishing third over 1400m at Hastings in early March but showed she is coming up well again by winning a 1000m trial on the Awapuni synthetic track on August 18. She will contest the Rating 75 race over 1200m at Hastings.
No Time To Jazz and Secret Falls showed their usual dash when working together over 1000m in 1:03.2, the first 400m in 27.8 and the final 600 in 35.4. They are also both expected to start at Hastings on Saturday week.
Melainia and a Wrote three-year-old gelding, both in the Thompson/Brown stable, worked in easily from the 800m peg in 51.5, speeding up over the last 600 in 36.4. Both horses looked to be hitting out strongly at the finish.
A Vespa four-year-old gelding an a Hellbent three-year-old filly, two others in the Thompson/Brown stable, clocked 51.7 for 800m and came home the last 600 in a quick 35.8. The Hellbent three-year-old filly looks a nice type.
Gohugo was given an easy workout over 1000m, running home the last 600 in 41.3. The Per Incanto four-year-old was a game debut second over 1200m on the first day of the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival and will now contest the Special Conditions Maiden over 1300m on the second day.
Matt Cain, who is likely to resume on the third day of the Hawke’s Bay carnival, worked well on his own over 1000m in 1:05.6, the last 600 in 36.8 while Can I Get An Amen, in her first serious hit out since returning to full work, ended her work with 600m in 39.9.
