Last start winner Zambezi Khan showed she has trained on the right way by turning in an excellent gallop in company at this morning’s Hastings trackwork session.
The Mongolian Khan two-year-old filly is preparing for Saturday’s Listed $80,000 Wellesley Stakes (1100m) at Trentham.
Several horses that are entered for black type races at Trentham were permitted to use the course proper for galloping this morning, where the markers were out 10 metres and the ground was rated heavy after intermittent bouts of steady rain since the weekend.
Zambezi Khan worked with stablemate Darwin over 800m on the course proper in 53.4, running the first 200m in an easy 16.1s before quickening over the last 600 in 37.3. Both horses were travelling well at the finish, especially Zambezi Khan.
Podium and Can I Get An Amen, two others from the Lowry stable, also worked together over 1000m on the course proper in 1:07.2, running the first 400m in 29.9 and coming home the last 600 in 37.3. It was also very good work by both horses.
Can I Get An Amen lines up in Saturday’s Group 1 $350,000 Telegraph Stakes (1200m) at Trentham while Podium contests the Group 3 $100,000 Anniversary Handicap (1600m).
Pep Torque and Duncan Creek were two others who worked on the course proper and they clocked 1:09.5 for 1000m, the last 600 in 38.1.
Pep Torque is entered for Saturday’s Group 3 $100,000 Trentham Stakes (2100m) but will only start if track conditions are not too testing while Duncan Creek is entered for the Group 2 $140,000 Wellington Guineas (1400m).
Dictation and Jameson worked together on the plough (slushy) and sprinted 600m in 37.4 before going on to run another 1000m in 1:07.4, the last 600 in 38.5. It was a testing workout for both horses and Dictation will certainly be a fit horse when he lines up in Saturday’s Rating 75 race over 2200m at Trentham.
Hunta Pence, another entered for Saturday’s Trentham Stakes, worked on his own over 1200m on the course proper in 1:19.2, running the first 600m in an easy 41.2 before quickening over the last 600 in 38. Any rain will enhance his chances.
Makkaldee had trainer Kate Hercock aboard when running a solo 800m on the No.1 grass in 52.8, the last 600 in 38.3 while Erebus worked easily over the same distance in 56.8, the last 600 in 40.6.
No Bizz and Sneeze were two others from the Nelson/McDougal stable to work on the plough and they recorded 1:05.2 for 1000m, coming home the last 600 in a quick 36.6.
Sunday Fever had trainer Fred Pratt aboard when running 800m on the plough in 51.3, the last 600 in 37.5 while Legit went quick in the early part of his 1000m gallop on the same track but was slowing towards the finish. He clocked 1:01.8 for the full distance, the last 600 in 36.8.
Moonlight Hustler was kept to not much more than three-quarter pace over 800m, the last 600 taking 41.8 while stablemate Matinee underwent similar work and ran home the last 600 in 41.4.
Supercell ran a solo 1000m on the plough in 1:13, the last 600 in 40.8.
