Hastings Trackwork Tuesday 28 Feb
John Jenkins | February 28, 2023

A solid workout by Pep Torque was the only highlight in a relatively quiet trackwork session at Hastings today.

Another 40 millimeters of rain had fallen in 48 hours, leaving the already heavy training tracks saturated.

Pep Torque had Kate Hercock aboard when working wide out on the plough and was timed to run 1000m in 1:11.2, the last 600 in 39.1. It was good work by the Nadeem nine-year-old, who doesn’t normally excel on very wet footing.

Trainer Kirsty Lawrence scratched Pep Torque from last Saturday’s Matamata meeting when the track came up with a rating of a heavy-10 but she gave the horse a 1400m jump out at Levin on Tuesday of last week which he won.

Pep Torque is now heading to Te Rapa this Saturday for the open 2200m race.

The majority of the other horses at the track this morning were restricted to just pace work on the limestone in the center.

Supercell was another who worked on the plough and he ran an easy 1000m in 1:15.5, the last 600 in 44.4. The Rip Van Winkle three-year-old turned in a big performance for fourth over 1340m at Wanganui last week after missing the start and is now likely to step up 1600m at Otaki on March 10.

Mr Bully Tee had co-trainer Mick Brown aboard when running 1000m in on the plough at three-quarter pace while Duncan Creek also worked in from the 1000m peg and was timed to run his last 600m in 45.
