Makkaldee, Stormcutter, Gohugo and a Savabeel-Evens two-year-old filly showed up well during a successful set of jumpouts held on the Hastings track today.
There were 13 heats run up against the inside rail on the course proper, which provided soft footing after overnight rain. Sixty-one horses contested the heats.
It was the first set of jumpouts to be held on the track since it underwent an extensive renovation, which included the re-cambering of three of the bends.
Jockeys who rode in the jumpouts and the racing officials present were pleased with the way the track held up, with the horses’ hooves going into the ground but no evidence of any slipping.
A set of official trials are now planned for Tuesday, April 28, as a final lead up to a resumption of racing on the track on Thursday, May 21.
Makkaldee clocked the fastest time of the four 1000m heats, recording 59.53s in beating Testwin by half a length, with Anaroa close up in third.
Stormcutter only won by a head in his 800m heat but the margin could have been a lot more had jockey Jonathan Riddell asked him for a serious effort. He is a two-year-old gelding by U S Navy Flag in the Lowry/Zydenbos stable.
Gohugo clocked the fastest time of the 800m heats when he easily accounted for his four rivals in a time of 48s. He has been freshened since finishing last of five runners over 1200m at New Plymouth a month ago.
A Savabeel two-year-old filly out of Evens in the Lowry/Zydenbos stable strode out well and recorded a good time of 49.62s in beating an Eminent filly by a head in her 800m heat.
There was one heat run over 1200m where Wave proved far too good for five other horses, mostly jumpers, and clocked a time of 1:14.88.
A number of jumpers also contested the two 2000m heats, including the well performed Nedwin, Dictation and Taika from the Paul Nelson and Corrina McDougal stable.
Who’s Sam, trained by Lucy de Lautour, led all the way in winning the first 2000m heat by two lengths in a time of 2:14.44 while his stablemates Carmenere and Jungleland quinellaed the other 2000m heat, with Carmenere winning by a long neck in a time of 2:12.88.
