Good solo workouts by Tulsa King and Sethero were the highlights in a reasonably quiet trackwork session at Hastings today.
Fast work was confined to the plough and there were only a handful of gallops timed as several horses from the centre were competing at the Levin jumpouts later in the day.
Tulsa King had former jockey Jordan Bassett aboard when working in from the 1200m peg on the plough in 1:25.5. He ran the first 600m at three-quarter pace before quickening over the last 600 in 38.5 and was working strongly at the finish.
The Staphanos four-year-old was unlucky not to finish a lot closer than 10th over 1600m on the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival and will be stepped up to 2100m this Saturday. Matt Cartwright has been booked to ride him.
Sethero had co-trainer Leah Zydenbos aboard when running 1000m in 1:06.8. He worked easily over the first 400m in 29.4 but then quickened appreciably over the last 600 in 37.4.
The Super Seth three-year-old turned in a good fourth on debut over 1100m at Woodville earlier this month and will be stepped up in distance at Waverley on Sunday.
Impressive last start winner Zorero was restricted to not much more than three-quarter pace when running 800m in 57.7, the last 600 in 42.1 and he is likely to start next on the third day of the Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival, on October 10.
Abeecee worked in at three-quarter pace from the 1000m peg and was let sprint home the last 600 in 37.7 while Swiffty was kept to just three-quarter pace over 800m, the last 600 in 44.8.
Will and Asher, two promising horses in the Lowry/Zydenbos stable, worked together over 800m in 54.6, the last 600 in 39.1.
Will found the distance too short and needed the run when fifth over 1200m at Hastings last start and could step out in the Special Conditions Maiden over 1300m there on Saturday while Asher, who finished a close second on the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival, is likely to race over 1400m at Waverley on Sunday.
Evensong, an impressive winner at the recent Foxton trials, worked with stablemate Lady Chandon and they were timed to run an easy 600m in 41 while Adira’s Way and Pennywise worked together over 600m in 41.5.
