Tulsa King stretched out well in a solo gallop at this morning’s Hastings trackwork session in preparation for Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay meeting.

Fast work was confined to the plough, which provided good footing. A penetrometer reading was taken on the course proper during the session and came up as a soft-6.

Tulsa King was not asked to run a fast time when working in from the 1000m peg in 1:09.1, running the first 400m in 29.6 before coming home the last 600 in 39.5. He was ken to go faster and has obviously trained on the right way since his third placing over 2100m on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay Spring carnival.

He will line up in the Rating 75 race over 2000m at Hastings this Saturday with Matt Cartwright booked to ride him.

Zorero was another who worked well on his own without being pressured. He was timed to run 800m in 55.1 but was only let stride out over the last 400m in 24.9. The Per Incanto four-year-old was an impressive winner over 1200m at Hastings on September 12 and will line up over the same distance at Hastings this Saturday. Kelly Myers has been booked to ride him again.

Say I Do took the time honours for the session when she underwent a searching gallop over 1200m in 1:15.6, running the first 600m in 38.8 before coming home the last 600 in 36.8. The Pierro mare finished at the tail of the field over 1200m at Hastings two weeks ago but will be stepped up to 1600m on Saturday.

Stablemates Fortunato and Magill were two others who recorded a good time when they were paired up over 800m in 54.7, the last 600 in 38.3. Fortunato ruined his chances by being very slow away in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) two weeks ago. He could contest the three-year-old 1400m race at Hastings on Saturday, providing the track is not too firm. Or he may go to Trentham for a three-year-old race later in the month.

Abeecee had trainer Caitlin Johnson aboard when running 1000m in 1:09.1, clocking 30.6 for the first 400m before quickening over the last 600 in 38.5. She will contest the Rating 65 race over 2200m at Hastings on Saturday.

Mount Cook gave stablemate Creation a head start when they left the 1000m peg but had joined him at the finish. They were timed to run the full distance in 1:06.6, the last 600 in a quick 37.9. Both horses are likely to have a hit out at the Hastings jumpouts next Monday.

Evensong was kept to just three-quarter pace when running a solo 1000m in 1:14, the last 00 in 44.6. She recorded a good debut fifth in a strong 1300m race at Hastings two weeks ago and that followed an impressive trial win. She will start next over 1400m at either Otaki or Waverley.

Vincero and Eighty Eight worked over 1000m in 1:11.3 and had the pace on over the last 600m in 37.4 while Molly Brown and Stranger, two horses in the Thompson/Brown stable, clocked 1:07.7 fir 1000m, the last 600 in 38.6.

Swiffty, preparing for a 1200m maiden race at Taupo this Friday, was given an easy 800m workout, coming home the last 600 in 40.7 while Jim Dandy finished off his work with 600m in 40.4.

Basilthegreek worked over a round and was timed to come him the last 1200m in 1:22.7, the final 600 in 39.6 while Abbeytakesitall and a Vanbrugh three-year-old gelding, both in the Thompson/Brown stable, worked over 1000m and were timed to run the last 800m in 52.1 and final 600in 38.

Half Share and Worlds Gone Mad, two others trained by Mick Brown and Sue Thompson, worked together over 1000m in 1:09.6, the last 600 in 40.3.
